McCoy Tyner







McCoy Tyner was born in Philadelphia on 11 December 1938. Comedians study piano at the age of 13 years under the influences of the mother. His early musical influences come from listening to Bud Powell.


Tyner's career began in 1960, training as a pianist Benny Golson and Art Farmer. That same year, replacing Steve Kuhn and is part officially in the historic John Coltrane Quartet with Elvin Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass. Join then, between 1961 and 1965, the composition of some of the most important recordings in jazz history as My Favorite Things, A Love Supreme, Ballads etc..


However, the relationship with Coltrane soon became difficult. The in turn to the free jazz and atonality of Coltrane Tyner does not like fighting a violent altercation with Elvin Jones. Feeling excluded from the de facto quartet, Tyner start a solo career and formed a trio which becomes the leader.


then leaving the historic quartet, the public, with Blue Note Records between 1967 and 1970, a series of albums of hard bop mold. The Real McCoy (1967), Tender Moments (1967), Time for Tyner (1967), Expansions (1968) and Extensions (1970) are the best examples of the period. (source Wikipedia)
